Simple Gestures Can Make or Break a First Impression

As a woman in the business field, Olsen has always been complimented on her handshake. She comments that her handshake has always been natural.

Olsen acknowledges that she does notice when a weaker handshake is given, and it’s always surprising to her. Regardless if it’s a man or woman giving the handshake, she says that a weak handshake shows a lack of confidence. This first impression holds true, especially when the person giving that handshake also avoids eye contact and looks uncomfortable in the social situation.

However, a good handshake is not hard to master and anyone can appear confident with some tips.

A Good Handshake

“Few people have any idea how they come across to others in initial meetings, despite the fact that most of us are aware the first few minutes of the meeting can make or break a relationship,” explain the Peases.

They also add that the “palm should be held vertical.”

“A good handshake should be a firm grip, but not overbearing,” Olsen explains.

A firm grip should be like holding a telephone, Olsen says. “You feel the weight of the phone in your hand, but you’re not squeezing it. It should be a comfortable feeling.”

“You should have eye contact, smile and be calm. You should show confidence, but not arrogance,” she adds.

Remember that the handshake is the first step of building rapport and gives anyone a first impression, Olsen says.

So, if you are not sure about your handshake the Peases recommend the following: “Take the time to practice handshakes with your friends and colleagues and you can quickly learn how to deliver a positive handshake every time”.
