The power of technology is allowing more entrepreneurs than ever before to follow their dreams and begin their own business ventures.  While many examples of technology are ‘there for the taking,’ the best entrepreneurs understand that there is a lot more to using it than just buying a product or downloading an application to a mobile device.

We explored the ways in which smart entrepreneurs harness technology to its full potential, creating additional opportunities for their business and making their lives easier in the process.

Understanding Technology

Until you understand the role technology can play in your business, you won’t be able to use it correctly.

Until you understand the role technology can play in your business, you won’t be able to use it correctly.

Just because something ranks highly on the iTunes store under the ‘Business’ banner, or was reviewed favorably by the New York Times, doesn’t automatically mean it is going to be the right tool for you.

One great place to start is to list all of the tasks you need to do in order to run your business effectively. From this point, you can begin to search for technology products, whether this be a software program, a smartphone, a mobile app, or something else, that will help you to manage your business. Importantly, it will save you from investing in things you don’t need, but looked like a good idea owing to the hype, bows, and ribbons that came attached.

Once you’ve got the technology, how, as a savvy entrepreneur, do you use it?

Getting the Work Done

Most technology products are purchased to do a job instead of an employee. To this end, to get the most out of your investments, you should treat them like you would an employee who works for you.

Question everything about every aspect of your new technology.

What does it do?

What are its objectives? Is it meeting them?

Could I get the job done cheaper, or to a higher standard, elsewhere?

Does it make my life easier?

Those are just the ones to ask to get started. It is a difficult mind set to get into, but once you reach a point of thinking ‘is everything working as hard as it can for me,’ you will have reached a very powerful stage in your entrepreneurial career.

How to Use Technology

Entrepreneurs should seek to use technology to allow them to focus on what they are good at, be that designing, selling, or something else.

Used correctly, there are enough technology products available to allow a whole business to operate in the background, while you concentrate on doing what you do best, which ultimately generates revenues for your business.

Posterita is revolutionary new retail point-of-sale (POS) software that allows chain stores and single stores to manage every aspect of their operations via an easy-to-use web-based platform.

    How Much Should I Tip?

Okay, a tip jar is optional. But at a sit-down restaurant, the server deserves at least 15%, with an additional 5% (each, don’t skimp) for good service and feeling nice. Leaving at least $2 per person is necessary if the food was cheap. Think about it: they make you happy, you make them happy. As a former server, I can justify that about 60%-70% of your living expenses come from tips. It’s just the right thing to do! It encourages [...]
