Canadian Researchers Find Long-Awaited Cure using “Dichloroacetate”

By Prachi Kamble, Staff Writer

No hoaxes, no rumours, this is the real deal. Researchers at the University of Alberta’s Department of Medicine have discovered a simple and inexpensive drug that is proven to kill cancer cells.

This drug, dichloroacetate (DCA), changes the metabolism of cancer cells and causes them to age and die, a feat that is alien to cancer cells and stops them from otherwise destroying the human body.

Dr.Michelakis and his team at the University of Alberta have been heavily researching the effects of DCA on non-human models since 2007. The team published its findings in that year and since then has proceeded to prove the success of DCA on human cancer cell samples and recently on actual human subjects.

Michelakis’ project is in dire need of funding at this very crucial stage of the research, as the majority of the breakthrough has already been unearthed. Fine-tuning on the findings—such as making the drug safe on all human recipients, as well as scoring out the side effects of the drug—still needs to be done.

If DCA becomes successful in the cure for cancer, it may eliminate the plethora of chemotherapy drugs that rake in millions for pharmaceutical companies each year.

With adequate funding and media attention, Michelakis’ cancer curing team may well accomplish what the twenty-first century had thought was impossible: an end to the baffling and invincible disease that is cancer.

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada. Cancer.org cites that “[a]n estimated 177,800 new cases of cancer … and 75,000 deaths from cancer will occur in Canada in 2011.” The organization also states in their recent findings of 2011 that 40% of women and 45% of men in Canada will develop cancer during their lifetimes.

For the Canadian population that is headed for these horrifying numbers, as well as for the entire global population, the discovery of DCA effect on cancer represents a wave of concrete and substantial hope.

An article on hubpages.com outlines the intricacies of University of Alberta’s cancer curing project. The article has recently been doing the rounds on the Internet and has brought to the mainstream the prolific medical discovery that could change the face of medicine in the coming years.

But what some feel is discouraging is the minimal attention pharmaceutical and major media entities are paying to this discovery. Some believe this is due to the patent-less status of DCA, which means there is virtually no profit for pharmaceutical companies in the area.

If DCA becomes successful in the cure for cancer, it may eliminate the plethora of chemotherapy drugs that rake in millions for pharmaceutical companies each year.

The NY Times article titled “Incentives Limit Any Savings in Treating Cancer” exposes the millions of dollars that pharmaceutical companies and doctors make solely from the sale of chemotherapy and other cancer-alleviating drugs. Berenson observes that “the[se] drugs range from relatively inexpensive treatments like Taxol, a breast cancer drug that costs about $150 a dose, to a new wave of biotechnology therapies like Avastin, a drug for colon and lung cancer that can cost as much as $8,800 a month.”

These numbers multiplied by the hundreds of thousands of cancer cases across North America spell big numbers, which the pharmaceutical industry is no doubt afraid of losing to the widespread adoption of DCA.

DCA is no stranger to the medical field as it has been commonly used to treat metabolic disorders. The figure below outlines the mode of DCA’s cancer-cell destruction process.

(Click on the image below to enlarge.)

Human cells are powered by the king of all its organelles – the mitochondrion. A host of mitochondria together provide every human cell with energy for all of the processes necessary for life.

Mitochondria however are also ironically responsible for cell aging and ultimately cell death. Cancer cells are able to skip the functions of the mitochondria by exploiting glycolysis as their mode of energy production, which unlike the mitochondria does not use oxygen in its energy-releasing glucose breakdown.

The result is not only the avoidance of cell aging and cell death by snubbing the mitochondria, but the cancer cells also acquire the corrosive ability of lactic acid (a by-product of glycolysis), that helps them eat through tissue and take over the human body at an even more alarming rate.

As outlined in the image above, the DCA reactivates the dormant mitochondria in cancer cells, so that the cancer cells age and eventually die like all other cells.

The DCA’s mode of operation is basically just that simple.

And just as simple would be its availability and cost if it were perfected and introduced in the medical field as soon as possible. According to the University of Alberta, tumour cells extracted from forty-nine brain tumour patients were subjected to DCA treatments and these tumours showed remarkable and desirable changes in their metabolism.

The research team also gave the DCA treatment to five patients whose tumours regressed over three months or at the very least remained constant in size while exhibiting no signs of growth.

The lack of media attention to this century’s eureka moment is startling and begs to be remedied. To the millions of cancer patients worldwide and their grieving families, Dr. Michelakis’ research breathes new and unprecedented hope into a bleak future.

With adequate funding and social awareness the DCA project could well put a close to the leading cause of death in North America. On the other hand, if DCA is not the rosy solution to cancer (as many critics believe it not to be), the research related to DCA may spur other cancer-research groups to pursue the end of cancer with greater vigour.

Either way, the end of cancer appears nearer than it did a decade ago and it is about time scientists and medical teams alike made cancer old news.

This was all over the news in Canada. If you search DCA cancer cure on Youtube there are alot of video clips from the news broadcasts. Here…the link to donate, and a link to a youtube video playlist that shows a few of the news broadcasts as well.

It is not all over the news because it is not promoted . I know because I’ve had research suppressed and blacklisted by the University of Waterloo to cover up NIH scholarship fraud. Research peer reviewed by M.D.Anderson Cancer Center. see http://www.cancerfraudbadbiotech.com And Noam Chomsky said my theories could be of phenomenal importance to mankind’s survival. And a US Surgeon General has regretted how I’ve been treated. You going to do something about it ? No ! Surprise, that is why it is not all over the news.Lindsay Lohan rules . Thank you E.A.Greenhalgh BTW I’m a cancer survivor who turned down chemo and radiation and since 1997 have been cancer free. Going to help? Nyah, that is why you don’t hear about it.

DCA shows promise and it slowed doubling time of my stage IV cancer from 24 days to 72 months… for a time. I’m keenly interested in DCA research. Sadly, all five of the glioblastoma patients in the U of A trial died, though a few lived longer than expected.

….this is gonna be like the treatment to relieve the symptoms of MS, where mainstream medicine blows off something as simple and straight forward as vein angioplasty. …not a cure, but a significant improvement in the lives of MS sufferers. If a treatment or cure doesn’t involve expensive pills or injections, often costing thousands $$… doctors seem to want nothing to do with it.

The politics of cancer will fight against this tooth and nail… huge money is at stake in the status quo.

  • Rogers_raymond

    It’s
important to note that the research referenced is a few years old.
Since then, recently published research has shown DCA (dichloroacetate)
to be ineffective against some types of cancer and the agent could even
    have a protective effect…
on tumours. A team at the University of Guelph discovered DCA is not
effective at killing colorectal cancer cells in low levels of oxygen, as
is often the case in tumours. We have been monitoring developments on
DCA research closely and you can find the most recent information on our
    website

On initial quick glance, noticed that the Guelph experiments used Sodium dichloroacetate, whereas the U of Alberta article doesn’t mention sodium.

Unfortunately, the reason this solution to cancer has received little or no media attention is because the same folks who control big pharma also control the media and to a great extent the government. Do you think the cancer society who receives millions in annual donations and grants is really interested in a cure? The answer is no.

I wish Dr.Michelakis all the best and hope he is persistent in his goal

    • sisterlauren

They (big pharma) also promote the drug war against cannabis.

I have been fighting against it for years as a religious freedom political action project. The first amendment is being ignored over this issue, so I stood up for our civil rights. I’m calling it a conspiracy to commit torture.

I came to that conclusion after looking at the drug war and it’s effect on kids. It is just awful, it truly is a conspiracy to commit torture. Making money does not excuse torture.

Way too many people acted like the drug war torture was OK because most of those people were colored.

As a Girl Scout Leader, I found that just unbelievably shocking and unacceptable.

Tumors may be of different shapes and size. Pattern of surgery depends primarily on the location and intensity of tumors. Small-sized tumors can be easily eliminated by surgical methods but same is not the case if the tumors are considerably large and have affected a major part of the organ. In such situations, the surgery needs to be conducted along with some other major treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

You cannot buy it online. And it’s a real bad idea to try and treat someone with something that you do buy online!! There have been people arrested for selling baking soda as DCA. Perhaps contact the researchers and see if the person/people you know may be of help in the trials!!

Forget this Kony viral bullshit and let’s get some people together preferably volunteer biological researchers and get some closure on this so called cure ,the public have some doubts we need to destroy that doubt and bring the truth to the world and by doing this will save hundreds of thousands of lives , so what are we waiting for.

  • Ama Rama

Hi. Do you have any peer reviews? I want to write an article on the subject and I can’t find any.

  • K-la

They can’t get funding?!?  What about all the hundreds of thousands of people running, walking, shaving their heads, etc. to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society and other charities??  Last year alone, the CCS raised about $200 million!  Run for The Cure raised over $30 million alone last year!  These charities raise hundreds of millions of dollars a year, and people give to them with the expectation that they are doing everything in their power to find the cure.  So why aren’t these charities backing this up???

    • Karl G

The only thing that charities hate more than inability to raise funds is actually achieving their objective.  Just think of all those people who will have to find new jobs.

      • Terry VanHaverbeke

Well said Karl ,your dead on everyone give to the University and the good doctor who is actually trying to advance his research Perk

    • crissyissy

More times than not, those charities are for things like new technology or replacement machines and upgrades in hospitals. Things to make it easier for doctors to treat cancer patients, and sometimes things to make life more comfortable for the patients. I am wondering myself if any of it actually goes towards the CURE. • enuf

Yeah I wonder the same thing myself. I’ve supported those organizations and am re thinking this move in the future. These dollars are obviously going not to research and prevention but rather pharmaceutical drugs in the hopes that people are sick and lining the pockets of drug companies.

    • Sad

22% of the CCS funding goes to research, 78% goes to fundraising, apparently CCS doesn’t have enough money!!!!

      • sad

Don’t give to CCS, give directly to the research … the public wins that way!

    • Natasha

Why don’t you ask the pharmaceutical companies where all your money is going? Have you seen what they drive? Have you seen the houses they live in? Have you heard about their serious lack of conscience?
But hey, in the big scheme of things…these charity fundraisers hosted by the general public are promoting a healthier way of living. Excersise has been proven to prolong lifespan and improve health! Not to mention the joy it brings to people to “do a good thing” with the people they love.

    • KBW

you actually think that money goes to finding a cure? look into how much the executives of those charities make. its buying them fancy new houses and cars.

  • Jazz

hmmm im starting to think all these walks for the cure are just a way of getting that money and that the government just want many people to die (less people more $) and once the population has decrease we finally ”discover the cure for cancer”. I hope im wrong, i really do because many families are left with a broken heart.

        • smoc1

avoiding all food that are genetically modified will make a big difference. They should be banned and are responsible for producing poison for profit that we are being mislead into consistently consuming and feeding to our children every day. This is why cancer occurrences hasve risen so drastically over the past decades. This is why our children have developed severe allergies. This is why we are so often weak and ill. We need to raise awareness to the causes and the cures.

Please create a bank account for funds to be donated by average citizens, businesses, and governments. It must go directly to those University researchers, and then into production. There will be less of a need for huge tax deductible charitable donations to the old Cancer campaign that doles out our funds, for less effective research methods, administration, advertising, collateral, etc. There may be other forms of cancer that they can work on, but this works on all grades. The people have spoken, and we don’t care if big pharma doesn’t benefit from this big health care cure.
