Facebook has launched a secure browsing connection (HTTPS) also used by many banks and ecommerce sites. This connection makes it very difficult for hackers to access your profile.
According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, victims of Internet-related crimes lost $559 million in 2009.
Facebook also offers a guide that gives some simple explanations about how Facebook privacy settings can be controlled.
When choosing your privacy settings, you can also preview your profile so you can see the result of your new settings.
This post will show you how to enable a secure connection on Facebook, and give you a few other tips for staying safe and secure on Facebook.
Enabling a Secure Connection
1. Go to Account > My Settings (from the Account menu in the top right corner).
2. Scroll to the Account Security section
In this section you can check two boxes, the first to enable a secure connection when possible, and the second to receive an email when a new computer or device accesses your account.
